The Airline That Flies to the Most Countries
The answer is Turkish Airlines, and it is not close. As of September 2026 it flies to 128 countries. The next airline on the list, Qatar Airways, reaches 87.
Turkish has held the Guinness World Record for the most countries flown to by an airline since 2012. The official Guinness figure is lower, at 120, because Guinness only counts routes that were flown throughout a full twelve months. Turkish itself quotes 131, which includes routes that are temporarily suspended. All three numbers describe the same network measured three ways, and that problem, as you will see, runs through this whole subject.
The Ten Airlines That Fly to the Most Countries
Here is the ranking as of September 2026. Where an independent count exists we use FlightConnections, which counts every airline the same way. For three airlines no current figure was available, so we counted them ourselves from the route data behind our own airline maps.
| # | Airline | Countries | Based in |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Turkish Airlines | 128 | Turkey |
| 2 | Qatar Airways | 87 | Qatar |
| 3 | Ethiopian Airlines | 84 | Ethiopia |
| 4= | Air France | 80 | France |
| 4= | British Airways | 80 | United Kingdom |
| 6 | Emirates | 75 | United Arab Emirates |
| 7 | United Airlines | 74 | United States |
| 8 | Lufthansa | 70 | Germany |
| 9 | American Airlines | 67 | United States |
| 10 | KLM | 66 | Netherlands |
American, in ninth, is easy to forget on a list like this, because the big US airlines are known for domestic size rather than international reach. Delta sits just outside the ten at 65. Below the top ten, flydubai reaches 57 countries, EgyptAir 56 and Royal Air Maroc 45.
The Biggest Airline Is Not the Most International
The most striking thing in the data is what it says about size. United Airlines operates 1,086 routes, nearly four times as many as Turkish. It reaches 74 countries, barely more than half.
That is United's domestic network: 725 routes, a dense web that almost never leaves the United States. It is one of the largest airline networks on Earth, and it adds exactly one country to the count.
The international network is where United's 74 countries come from. Route count measures how big an airline is. Country count measures how far it reaches. They are different questions, and the airlines that win one rarely win the other.
Why Istanbul Wins
Turkish's lead comes down to geography, and you can measure it. We took each airline's main hub and counted how many of the countries it flies to lie within 3,000 km, comfortably inside the range of a single-aisle jet.
| Airline | Hub | Countries within 3,000 km |
|---|---|---|
| Turkish Airlines | Istanbul | 57 |
| Qatar Airways | Doha | 24 |
| Ethiopian Airlines | Addis Ababa | 29 |
| Air France | Paris | 27 |
| Emirates | Dubai | 12 |
Istanbul reaches 57 countries within 3,000 km. Doha reaches 24 and Dubai 12. Istanbul sits where Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and North Africa meet, so dozens of capitals are close enough to serve with smaller aircraft on short, cheap flights. A Gulf hub is surrounded by water and desert, and has to reach most of its countries the long way.
Nothing about Turkish's long-haul network is unusual. What sets it apart is the sheer number of short international routes stacked on top of it, a pattern you can see in the dense knot of lines around Istanbul on the map above. Its stopover scheme makes the most of it, as we covered in our guide to airline stopover programs.

Ethiopian Airlines reaches 84 countries, more than Air France or British Airways, from a hub in Addis Ababa. Its network is built almost entirely around connecting Africa: to itself, and to the rest of the world.

The shape is the reverse of United's. Where United serves a few countries with very many airports, Ethiopian reaches a great many countries with one or two airports each, which is what pushes its country count so high for an airline of its size.

Air France and British Airways are tied at 80 countries, with Lufthansa on 70 and KLM on 66. Their reach is long-standing rather than new: the old flag carriers built their networks over decades, and much of Air France's reach lies across Africa, as the map shows.

Why Every Source Gives a Different Number
Search for how many countries an airline flies to and you will find three or four different answers. They are rarely wrong; they are measuring different things.
- The counting window. Guinness gives Turkish 120 because it counts only routes flown across a full year. Turkish quotes 131 including suspended routes. FlightConnections counts 128 on its current schedule. Same airline, three honest answers.
- The airline or the group. The Lufthansa Group says it reaches around 100 countries, but that adds together SWISS, Austrian, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings. Lufthansa itself flies to 70.
- Out-of-date figures. Wikipedia's list of Air France destinations still gives 94 countries, a figure dated September 2022. Today it is 80.
- Disruption. The Gulf carriers' networks shrank in 2026, when Middle East airspace closures cut flights across the region. Emirates spent part of the year flying well below its full schedule, which is why it sits lower here than its usual figure of around 85.
- Counting by hand. Even a careful count can miss routes. Our own count of British Airways, built from airport route listings, came out five countries below FlightConnections, which is why we used the independent figure wherever one existed.
The ranking at the top of this page uses one consistent source wherever possible, so its numbers can be compared with each other even where they differ from figures elsewhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which airline flies to the most countries?
Turkish Airlines, with 128 countries as of September 2026. It has held the Guinness World Record for the most countries flown to by an airline since 2012.
How many countries does Turkish Airlines fly to?
128 as of September 2026, according to FlightConnections. Guinness's official figure is 120, because it counts only routes flown across a full twelve months, and Turkish quotes 131 including temporarily suspended routes.
Which airline has the most routes?
Among the airlines here, United, with 1,086 routes. But most are domestic, and it reaches only 74 countries, against Turkish's 128 from roughly a quarter as many routes.
Which US airline flies to the most countries?
United, with 74, followed by American Airlines with 67 and Delta with 65.
Does Emirates fly to more countries than Qatar Airways?
Not as of September 2026. Qatar reaches 87 countries and Emirates 75, partly because the 2026 Middle East airspace closures cut Emirates' network for much of the year.
Why do different websites give different numbers?
Because they count differently: over different time periods, for a single airline or a whole airline group, and with figures of different ages. The same network can produce several honest answers.

The biggest airline in the world and the one that reaches the most of it are not the same airline, and the reason is mostly where each one happens to be standing.
